Representatives of BC’s Film & Television Industry approached Actsafe (formerly SHAPE) in 2007 over concerns regarding ice melt products being used to assist in clearing walkways. These products tended to increase the conductivity of electricity, and electricians working on film sites were receiving electrical shocks. Research on ice melt products was requested.

A supervisor is anyone who instructs, directs, and controls workers as they carry out their work tasks. Supervisors don’t have to be department heads, which is an important distinction that not everyone knows. Do you know if you are a supervisor?
In this edition of Safety Scene, we have articles explaining the responsibilities of a supervisor, the chain of command to become a supervisor, and the supervisor’s role in reassigning refused work. All supervisors should also register for our December 9 webinar: Bullying and Harassment Prevention for Supervisors!
You will find upcoming November courses and workshop dates, our newly-published Performer Flying and Aerial Stunts information sheet, 2023 base premium rates from WorkSafeBC, and more!
We want to hear from you!
We appreciate any feedback you may have. Maybe you’d like to write an article for our next edition? For content and advertising opportunities, please email Jacqueline at communications@actsafe.ca.
As a supervisor, if a worker reports a workplace Bullying and Harassment (B&H) concern, you are responsible for addressing the concern in accordance with existing B&H policies and procedures that are required to be in your organization’s Occupational Health & Safety Program. Due to the potentially sensitive nature of this type of incident, you also should respond emotionally intelligently to ensure the individual feels heard, acknowledged, respected, and reassured about the next steps.
In this resource, there are some best practices to consider when responding to incidents or reports of workplace B&H.
Actsafe Safety Association will be joined by Grégoire Gagnon, Cultural Human Resources Council, to present the webinar Bullying and Harassment Prevention for Supervisors in BC’s Arts and Entertainment Workplaces on December 9 at 10–11.30 am PST.

Please note:
The webinar will have closed captioning available, and the recording will be sent to all who register once it has been edited.
This quarter’s theme is Slips, Trips, and Falls.
Slips, trips, and falls are some of the most reported injuries in the arts and entertainment industry year on year, and many of these accidents could be prevented if you paused and looked around your workspace before starting your work.
In this edition of the Safety Scene, we present to you some valuable information to help you understand the risks of not wearing appropriate footwear, the need for proper inspections, and what you can do to eliminate those preventable injuries. We’ll even show you how doing something as simple as taking five minutes to properly assess your worksite can help keep you and other workers safe. These articles have been carefully written to share experiences and advice so that everyone can learn and make a positive difference in their workplaces, making sure everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.
