Manu is the Executive Director at Actsafe Safety Association and joined the team in March 2019. He has a varied background and extensive experience in the fields of physiotherapy, ergonomics, education and not for profit management. He is very active in promoting Ergonomics and has been a speaker at various conferences including TEDx. He has Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist (CCPE) and CMHA Certified Psychological Health and Safety Advisor (CPHSA) designations. Manu is an ISO18001 lead auditor and has contributed to drafting the OHS legislation for Govt. of Rwanda. He also sits on the board of the Work Wellness and Disability Prevention Institute.When not busy with work, Manu likes to play chess, sing karoake songs and take photos. An interesting fact about Manu is that he can read, write and speak 5 different languages – Telugu, English, Hindi, Gujarati and Oriya.

Jennifer Lane

Marketing & Communications Coordinator

Jen is the Marketing and Communications Coordinator at Actsafe and joined the team in October 2018, four months after moving to Vancouver…

…from Ireland. She has an undergraduate degree in Commerce and a Masters degree in Food Marketing.

Jennifer also has experience in administration, communications, and marketing. She is part of the CSR committee at Actsafe and likes to consider herself as ‘the funny one’ in the office.

When not at work, you can normally find Jen walking along the beach at English Bay, socialising with friends, phoning her family in Ireland, or exploring all that Canada has to offer.

In October 2018, following her 10 month ASL and Deaf Studies diploma, Lisa joined the Actsafe team as the Administrative Assistant, and has since transitioned to Operations Assistant. Throughout her time at Simon Fraser University, Lisa gained extensive experience in client care (humans, critters and dogs), time management, and administration; ultimately graduating with a BSc in Biology. She is a part of the CSR committee at Actsafe and likes to consider herself as “the funniest one” in the office. When not at work you can find Lisa eating noodles and pickles- together or separately! When she isn’t eating she is usually thinking about what she is going to eat next while shes working out, stalking neighbourhood dogs, and drinking tea.

Maureen Kaake

Maureen joined Actsafe in August 2005 as the receptionist/administrative assistant when it was still operating as ‘SHAPE’. She has had a variety of roles during her tenure here and today is enjoying her role as Operations Manager. 

Prior to joining Actsafe, Maureen taught graphic design, as well as various computer applications at a private college for 10 years. She is currently enrolled in the Management Studies Diploma Program at Thompson Rivers University with a goal of earning her Bachelor in Commerce degree, specialising in human resources. 

When not at work, Maureen is busy training for the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer and rides as a survivor every August. She also enjoys painting, writing and continues to dabble in graphic design work in her spare time. Maureen is also a mother of 3 and a grandmother to two young boys. An interesting fact about Maureen; she was born and raised in a suburb of Montreal and credits The Beachcombers as the reason why she was drawn to the westcoast.

After 18 years of working in all aspects of motion picture and television production, Anand moved to Actsafe where he took on the role of Communications Manager. In early 2017, Anand added the Industry Advisor role to his portfolio, and is now responsible for managing education and outreach programs for the motion picture, television and commercial industries. Considered the “funny one” in the office, Anand is also an avid foodie, and enjoys cooking for family and friends alike. He also spends time as a volunteer coach for his son’s soccer team, and is still active in producing his own motion picture projects.

Along the way he has worked with some amazing organizations: The Massey Theatre, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Royal City Musical Theatre, The Canadian Institute for Theatre Technologies, to name just a few. Don now brings all of that experience and love for live performance to Actsafe. From ladder safety to air quality, Don has experienced it first hand and can help you navigate the world of performing arts safely. Outside of work, Don enjoys exploring North America by riding his mountain bike and goes camping with his family. He has camped the entire of the West Coast, and most of Canada, only failing to cross into Mexico! Don also lives and breathes theatre so he loves to help out in any production that can use a helping hand. Don’s favourite show of all time is The Phantom of the Opera.

Tracey Wood

Executive Director

Tracey is a lawyer by training, called to the bar of Ontario in 1993 and the bar of BC in 1998. She has worked in the entertainment and motion picture industries for 23 years and for the past 10 she has been the labour relations representative for the major U.S. studios in Canada. She has been involved with Actsafe since its beginnings and currently is the Employer Representative for Motion Picture.

Tom Adair

Motion Picture/Video Worker Representative

Tom has been chairperson of the IATSE Local 891 Health and Welfare Benefits Trust Plan for the last 25 years and a trustee for 27. Between 1998-2017, Tom was Executive Director of the BC Council of Film Unions representing over 10,000 employees and members of IATSE Local 891, IATSE Local 669 and Teamsters 155. He has also held various other positions including being on the Board of Governors for Capilano University, as a board member of Pacific Cinematheque, and he sat on the Advisory Planning and Environment Committees in the City of New Westminster. 

As an avid downhill skier and bicyclist, Tom keenly recognizes that gravity rules.

Nancy Harwood

Chair

Nancy practises in the area of occupational health and safety law and is the principal of the Harwood Safety Group. Prior to that, she worked for over 15 years as a Prevention director with WorkSafeBC, and as a Vice Chair of the WCB Review Board. Nancy has also served on various OHS-related boards, including the Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Legislation, the Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission, the Canadian Standards Association, and as a Canadian government representative to the International Labour Organization, Geneva.

Miles Muir

Operations Assistant

In the early 1980’s, Miles planned to attend Malaspina College’s tech theatre diploma program and to carry on to the University of Victoria for a degree in theatre – but after a year and a half in Nanaimo, he was hired by the college full time as the Technical Director of the theatre and was able to work on a large fully professional summer theatre festival called “Shakespeare +” in Nanaimo. It was also here that he began to be interested in worker health and safety in the performing arts and how that can fit in to the regulatory world of WorkSafeBC.

 

Miles moved to Victoria and was able to work at the McPherson Playhouse and Royal Theatres, and became the Production Manager at the Belfry Theatre in Victoria. In Vancouver, Miles has worked on Expo 86 as the Technical Director of one of the theatres in the Canada Pavilion, toured with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and, as a member of IATSE Local 118 / 168, worked as a stage hand in all the major Vancouver venues. He has also toured internationally with various large Broadway musicals such as “Phantom of the Opera” and “Showboat”.

Miles has been the Technical Director of the three Civic Theatres (Queen Elizabeth Theatre, The Orpheum, and the Vancouver Playhouse), employed by the City of Vancouver for the last 21 years, and has been an active participant in Shape/Actsafe since its inception in 1998.

Lynne Charbonneau

Vice-Chair

Lynne Charbonneau is a lawyer who has practised for over 25 years, first with a Canadian national law firm and then in-house at a global financial institution. Recently, she was appointed as a judge of the World Bank Administrative Tribunal in Washington DC. Locally, she serves on the Board of Directors of BlueShore Financial Credit Union. She is a member of the Futures Task Force of the Law Society of British Columbia and the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the Centre for Business Law at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia.

Dave Wilson

Operations Manager

Dave has been an Actsafe Performing Arts Standing Committee member since early 2018 and a Board member from 2019. He is a member of IATSE Local 118 (Vancouver, stage) and serves on the Local’s Executive Board as a Member-at-Large. His background also includes many years in association management, communications, and educational services through both employment and service with local, provincial, national, and international organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce in human resources management and is a Certified Association Executive – a professional designation awarded by the Canadian Society of Association Executives.
