ASPIRING FILMMAKER AWARD

Congratulations to the filmmaking team of Brooks Secondary/Powell River Digital Film School for winning Actsafe’s 2023 Aspiring Filmmaker Award with their entry “Michael”!

The filmmaking team’s video was judged by Actsafe Safety Association as part of the WorkSafeBC Student Safety Video Contest.

Actsafe’s Aspiring Filmmaker Award gives aspiring filmmakers a unique opportunity to get a kickstart on their careers in B.C.’s motion picture production industry. The award provides one filmmaking team exposure for their project, and a behind the scenes tour of a local production.

The Rules:

In addition to WorkSafeBC’s Student Safety Video Contest rules and regulations:

  • Actsafe will determine three videos to be shortlisted and announced as the finalists for the Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award.
  • WorkSafeBC will determine the shortlisted videos for all categories of the WorkSafeBC Student Safety Video Contest. The winning video selected by WorkSafeBC may not necessarily be the same video selected by Actsafe for the Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award.
  • Submissions for the Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award must be from students in WorkSafeBC’s Student Safety Video Contest – Grade 11–12 category.
  • Entries for this award must be a live-action production. No animation, no stop motion.
  • All safety rules and regulations must be adhered to. Resources for safety in motion picture production can be found at actsafe.ca.
  • The Director plus one other creative contributor (producer, writer, designer) from the production will be deemed the winner of the prize.
  • There is no cash value for this prize.

Actsafe’s Aspiring Filmmaker Award prize list

The winner of Actsafe’s Aspiring Filmmaker Award will receive:

  • Two passes to the 2023 Actsafe Entertainment Safety Conference.
  • A behind-the-scenes tour of a local motion picture and television production.
  • A screening of their video at a 2022 Director’s Guild of Canada event, with an opportunity to network with other industry professionals.
  • A crystal trophy to take home.

Judging Criteria:

  • Is WorkSafeBC’s theme addressed appropriately?
  • Does the writing and direction use imaginative and creative ways to convey the theme?
  • Does the video exhibit originality?
  • Does the video display innovative ideas or storytelling techniques
  • What is the production value of this entry?
    Is the camera steady and are the shots framed and focused?
    Are close-ups and camera angles used to add meaning to the story?

2018 Winner

Congratulations to Ethan Eigenfeldt, from Walnut Grove Secondary School, who was the winner of 2018’s inaugural Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award!

Ethan’s video No Buts – Listen To Your Gut was a humorous, well shot, well written, well acted and on-message production. Judged by Actsafe and film industry professionals at the WorkSafeBC Student Safety Video Contest.

A Brief History

Actsafe Safety Association, in partnership with The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC), established the Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award in 2018. Actsafe is proud to award aspiring filmmakers with the unique opportunity to get a kickstart on their careers in B.C.’s motion picture production industry.
